“Events & Eventualities: Commentary on the public sector’s role in major festivals and events”
A lecture by Professor Malcolm Foley, UWS Executive Dean and Vice-Principal.
Thursday 30 September 2010.

Competition is increasing across the world’s cities, nations and governments to host major events like the FIFA World Cup and the Commonwealth Games. Equally, some annual festivities – the Edinburgh International Festival and Celtic Connections, for example - have become mainstays of local economies and of the cultural environments in which they operate. Many of these events are either led or regulated (or both) via the public sector.
In his presentation, Professor Foley will explore the implications for public policy development, active citizenship and spectators’ experiences of state intervention in local, national and global events.
Professor Foley has over 20 years’ experience in Scottish HE and has a wide research, consultancy and business engagement portfolio across the culture, leisure and active lifestyle sectors.
The event takes place at our Paisley Campus. Please RSVP at inspiringpeople@uws.ac.uk or call us on 0141 848 3598.
The lecture is free but for catering purposes we do ask that you RSVP.
