Money Advice for Graduating Students
When you are no longer a student, it is important to review your finances and understand how this change can impact your entitlement to funding, such as benefits. We have collated the information below to help you.
Student Bank Accounts/Overdrafts
If you had a student bank account and/or overdraft it is important to talk to your bank about this. You might need to change the type of bank account you have and will need to understand how your overdraft will change, and how long you might have to repay this before interest is added.
Budgeting
Anytime your income changes, whether it is increasing or decreasing, it is a good idea to review your financial commitments and prepare a budget. We recommend the Money Advice Service Budget Planner, which is a free online tool that helps you assess your money situation. You can create an account which will allow you to log in and update your budget regularly, which is the best way to stay on top of your finances and get the most out of your money.
Benefits
You may have been in receipt of some benefits during your studies, but it is important to remember that your student status may have impacted this. Now that you are no longer a student, you should ensure you are reassessed for benefits in order to access your full entitlement. The world of benefits can be complex, so we recommend you get advice from a professional, such as Citizens Advice Scotland, Turn2Us, or advice centres in your local authority.
