Modo Systems-KTP

The KTP associate role allowed me to step into the IT and Machine learning industry with the backing of the university. The project also provided various different ways to improve my personal development and skills as well as a chance to take up further post-graduate education.

The role allowed me to get into working business and improve my skillset as well as build a working machine learning system for the company which is planned to be integrated in production. It also opened up job prospects and landing a full time job on the KTP’s completion with the company.

No, I found out about the role from my MSc supervisor at UWS.

The most positive aspects of my role as a KTP associate with Modo systems and UWS was the ability to expand my knowledge, not only for a job level but also on a personal development level. It also provided opportunities to meet other industry professional and KTP Associates through the KTP residential training modules and conferences.

The biggest challenge in my specific KTP project was the project objectives itself as it involved the creation, testing and implementation of a complex machine learning system and to integrate it inyet an even more complex and novel system architecture.

A typical day as a KTP associate varies from one associate to another as the projects are different as well as the places of work. Some work at the company’s premises throughout their project, whereas other may work from the university premises. So it is difficult to describe a typical day from above.

There have been no unexpected experiences or outcomes from the role apart from switching to work from home in the last few months of the project due to the world pandemic.

There have been various training and development undertaken as part of the KTP including two KTP residential modules at Ashorne Hill which provided various exercises and activities with other associates to improve team building, self development and general networking. Other training taken as part of my KTP includes various courses for self and professional development, a lecture at a UWS module for MSc students, mentorship from my KT advisor Gerry Black as well as my company head and KTP supervisor.

KTP is a unique experience for all parties involved as it provides benefits to each in its own way. It also allows the ability to bring together different industries like the academic and a company to share and explore new and novel ideas. The associate also gets a great insight and step forward into the commercial industry with help and guidance available throughout.

I would definitely recommend a KTP associate role to other graduates as it provides great benefits especially coming out of University. One of the biggest benefits includes an almost certain chance of landing a full time job post the KTP project
