Understanding Funding Payments
If you have applied for a package of student funding, the enrolment process will have an impact on when you receive payments. It is important to understand and plan for this, as you may not get your first payment as early as expected.
Depending on your funding situation, you will find more information in the selections below.
Applied for student funding and been awarded
If you have applied for your student funding through Scottish Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS), Student Finance England (SFE), Student Finance Northern Ireland (SFNI) or Student Finance Wales (SFW), and your application has been finalised, you will have received an award notice. This will indicate how much you can expect to receive and when this will be paid to you.
The first payment date will usually be the first day of term, and in some award notices, this may be shown as a date range covering the first week of term.
You will not receive your student funding until you are fully enrolled, and the term has officially started. While you can often complete enrolment before the term begins, funding will not be released until the term has started.
If you’ve been awarded a student loan, it can take up to five working days from the start of your course or from your date of enrolment (whichever is later) for the payment to reach your bank account, once released by SLC.
If you’ve been awarded a SAAS bursary or grant, you will usually receive your first payment on the first day of your course, regardless of enrolment, and should refer to the date on your SAAS Award notice.
If you still haven’t received your first loan payment more than 5 working days after the start of term/enrolment, you can contact us for help. Before doing so, you must be certain that you have been awarded this funding and be confident that you have fully enrolled. If you are sure everything is in place, contact SAAS/SLC@uws.ac.uk and ask them to check that your enrolment has been confirmed to SAAS and SLC as it should have been.
Applied for student funding but not yet been awarded
If you have applied later for your student funding through Scottish Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS), Student Finance England (SFE), Student Finance Northern Ireland (SFNI) or Student Finance Wales (SFW), and your application has not yet been finalised, you won’t have an award in place that is ready to be released.
You should still enrol as early as you can. Once your application for student funding is assessed and awarded, you will receive an award notice. This will indicate how much you can expect to receive and when this will be paid to you.
You will not receive your student funding until your enrolment is confirmed, and this process should happen automatically. It can then take up to five working days for the payment to reach your bank account, once released by SAAS and/or SLC.
If you still haven’t received your first payments more than 5 working days after you have been awarded this funding, and you are confident you are fully enrolled, contact SAAS/SLC@uws.ac.uk to check that your enrolment has been confirmed to SAAS and SLC as it should have been.
Enrolling without a source of tuition fee funding
If you applied for tuition fee support from Scottish Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS), Student Finance England (SFE), Student Finance Northern Ireland (SFNI) or Student Finance Wales (SFW) but have not yet had your application finalised, you will need to pay a tuition fee deposit to complete enrolment. You should not delay enrolment.
This also applies if you do not receive any student funding for tuition fees.
The tuition fee deposit can be paid during the enrolment process, and you will be guided on how to do this.
When your student funding application is finalised, and assuming you are awarded full tuition fee support, you will then be able to request a refund.
If you are awarded tuition fee support, but this does not cover your full tuition fee, any deposit paid will go towards the balance. You can then pay any further balance of tuition fees by setting up a payment plan.
If you do not receive any student funding for tuition fees, you can pay the balance by setting up a payment plan.
Further information about payment plans, deposits and refunds can be found on our Student Tuition Fee FAQ webpage.
BriDging the gaps in student funding
Even if you have a student funding award that is ready to be released to you, there will be a delay before this lands in your bank account. That delay will be longer if you have applied later for student funding and do not yet have an award in place that is ready to be released.
You should plan ahead for this period, thinking about the expenses you need to meet during this time. These expenses will depend on individual circumstances and may range from smaller costs, such as travel to campus to engage with induction activities and teaching, or bigger monthly bills like rent, car payments etc.
It is unlikely that the University will have any source of funds to help you bridge a gap like this, which is why it is incredibly important to apply for student funding as early as possible, and to set aside some money to meet your essential costs at the start of term, before your student funding becomes available to you.
