Your Right to Study Documentation
The University is required by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) to conduct a right to study check on every student who is not a British, Irish, Channel Islands or Isle of Man national.
This is to demonstrate that they have the right to study in the UK and at the University of the West of Scotland.
The University must keep a copy of these documents and check regularly for any updates to students’ immigration status.
The Registry Department is responsible for collection and maintenance of these records.
PROVIDing YOUR DOCUMENTS
We will ask you to provide your documents during checkpoints. This will happen at the start of each term.
You will be notified of the checkpoint via an email from UKVI.Checkpoints@uws.ac.uk and asked to complete an online form.
It is vitally important to complete each right to study checkpoint. Failure to do so means breach of UKVI regulations.
Our office reports students in breach of regulations to their respective Schools, which then take steps to withdraw sponsorship.
Maintaining your student record also ensures you can apply for a Graduate Route visa when the time comes.
New students and continuing students have different checkpoint requirements. See below for more information.
New Students Right to Study Checkpoint
At your very first checkpoint as a new student at UWS, you demonstrate your right to study by providing copies of your immigration documents.
You need to provide:
1) A copy of your vignette visa with entry stamp.
NOTE: If your vignette visa was not stamped at the airport, you will also need to provide either your e-ticket or your boarding pass from your journey to the UK.
2) A copy of the front and back of your BRP card.
Students with a share code
You need to provide:
1) A copy of your EUSS letter with share code.
2) A copy of your e-ticket or boarding pass from your journey to the UK.
Image Quality
The images you upload must be,
- high quality,
- clearly legible,
- show all four corners of the document.
If we cannot easily read the details of your documents you will have to upload them again.
Continuing Students Right to Study Checkpoint
Once you have passed your first right to study checkpoint as a new student, you will participate in continuing student checkpoints each term.
At those checkpoints we need you to:
1) Confirm your visa and passport details,
2) Confirm your UK address and phone number,
3) Renew your commitment to attendance monitoring.
Your term address must be your personal UK address and cannot be the University campus address.
Update your details
You can update your details by logging into the Personal Information section of Self Service Banner.
Exchange Students on a Visitor’s Visa
If you are visiting UWS for a term as an exchange student, we are also required to collect your information. You will receive an email from us asking you to provide:
1) Your passport
2) Your flight information, in the form of your e-ticket or boarding pass.
When you have received this email, you must send copies of your documents to hub@uws.ac.uk.
Changes to your right to study
If any of your right to study documents change while studying at UWS you must inform us straight away.
You can do this by emailing hub@uws.ac.uk, letting us know that there has been a change and including copies of any new visa or passport documents.
New Online Immigration eVisa
By 2025, Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) holders need to take action to create a UKVI account and access their eVisa to prove their rights and immigration status. Find out what you will need to do, and when, at Online immigration status (eVisa).
You can also access the UWS BRP and E-visa guide online under the 'Arriving in the UK' section at our Information for International Students.
