In celebration of Tartan Week 2024, the University has announced the introduction of two new scholarships for applicants from the United States of America.
The Frances Wright Scholarship
Honouring a trailblazer in Education, Feminism and Literature.
About the Scholarship
The Frances Wright Scholarship at UWS honours the enduring legacy of one of history's most influential feminists and writers. Established to commemorate the pioneering spirit and intellectual contributions of Frances Wright, this fund seeks to empower future generations of women who embody her passion for social justice, gender equality, and literary excellence.
This fund provides a full fees scholarship to deserving applicants who identify as women – with the Scholarship to be awarded in each of our 4 academic Schools – Business & Creative Industries; Computing, Engineering & Physical Sciences; Education & Social Sciences; and Health & Life Sciences.
Who was Frances Wright?
Born in Dundee, Scotland, in 1795, Frances Wright was a visionary feminist, social reformer, and prolific writer. Throughout her life, she fearlessly challenged societal norms, advocating for women's rights, abolitionism, and educational reform. Frances Wright's courageous activism and groundbreaking ideas continue to inspire and influence movements for equality and justice around the world.

The Frederick and Anna Murray Douglass Scholarship at UWS commemorates the enduring legacy of two remarkable individuals whose courage, resilience, and dedication to social justice continue to inspire generations. Established to honour the contributions of Frederick Douglass and his wife Anna Murray Douglass, this scholarship seeks to empower promising students who embody their spirit of leadership, activism, and commitment to positive change.
This fund provides a full fees scholarship to applicants who belong to an underrepresented racial or ethnic minority group – with the Scholarship to be awarded in each of our 4 academic Schools – Business & Creative Industries; Computing, Engineering & Physical Sciences; Education & Social Sciences; and Health & Life Sciences.
Who were Frederick and Anna Murray Douglass?
Frederick Douglass, born into slavery in 1818, rose to become one of the most influential figures in American history. A renowned abolitionist, author, and statesman, Douglass tirelessly fought against slavery and championed civil rights for all people. His wife, Anna Murray Douglass, played a pivotal role in his life, offering unwavering support and encouragement as he pursued their mission of freedom and equality.
