Two talented students from University of the West of Scotland (UWS) have been awarded bursaries from the Royal Television Society (RTS) for 2024.
Selected for their academic and creative achievements, as well as their commitment to pursuing media careers, Samantha Macalister, 22, from Dundonald, and Stuart Warren, 32, from Inverness - both enrolled in the BA(Hons) TV, Radio and Podcast Production (TVRPP) programme - have each received a bursary aimed at supporting talented students from low-income backgrounds in their journey into the media industry.
In addition to the financial reward, both Stuart and Samantha will receive free access to all RTS events, including exclusive screenings, lectures, and industry networking opportunities. They will also be paired with an industry mentor, offering invaluable guidance and insight into the dynamic world of television and broadcasting. As part of their bursary, they will also enjoy free RTS membership, providing a wealth of additional resources to support their growth and career aspirations.
Both students are enthusiastic about the year ahead and excited about the unique opportunities this bursary will provide.
Samantha, who has been awarded the bursary twice before, is currently in her third year of the programme, has a keen interest in news and sports broadcasting and has been awarded the RTS/STV TV Production and Journalism Bursary.
Speaking of the importance of this award, Samantha said:
"I applied for the RTS bursary before starting at UWS after discovering the opportunity on Instagram. I was genuinely surprised to be selected, as I believed my low-income background in the West of Scotland would put me at a disadvantage.Samantha Macalister
“Receiving the RTS bursary provides me with valuable networking and mentoring opportunities, which are crucial for my success in the creative industries.
“It gives me a significant advantage in pursuing a career in a field that I previously thought was out of reach, especially since I didn’t have any connections in the industry. Additionally, there is a lack of representation from my area, making this opportunity even more impactful."
Stuart, a third-year student, has already shown remarkable talent in his chosen field of radio and podcasting, becoming Head of Sports on UWS Radio. Commenting on receiving the Digital Innovations Bursary, Stuart said: "I'm really excited and honoured to be given the opportunity to be an RTS scholar.
“It means a lot to me because I was the first person from my family to go to university. I know this opportunity will open so many doors for me to break into the industry.Stuart Warren
“My lecturers at UWS have been fantastic with supporting me and I want to thank them as well."
