Mature student, Matt Bradbury, is pursuing a career change; undertaking University of the West of Scotland’s BSc (Hons) Mathematics with Education degree.
This degree programme enables students to complete a four-year Honours degree in Mathematics, together with the teaching qualification required to teach Mathematics in secondary schools.
Matt, 38, spent almost two decades working in the hospitality sector but after losing his job during the COVID pandemic he decided it was the ideal time to pursue a new career path.
The budding mathematician, who is in the first year of the course, said: “I worked in the hospitality industry for almost 20 years, starting as a bar tender and progressing up to training manager and then manager in the biggest hospitality organisation in Scotland. Unfortunately, due to the global pandemic the industry was hit hard and I found myself unemployed. After reflecting on my previous enjoyment and success as a trainer, an opportunity opened for me to pursue my goal of a career in education. Not long after applying for the Mathematics with Education course I was delighted to receive an unconditional offer and felt I had found myself on a new path to a better future.
“Due to the restrictions caused by lockdown measures a lot of the first year has been delivered online. The lecturers are extremely helpful and welcome any questions, offering help and guidance where needed. The University also helped me out financially with their discretionary fund. I was able to update my home setup and invest in a new computer to ensure attendance to online lectures and my assignments could be done without the fear of constant computer crashes.
“The best thing about studying this course is the knowledge and peace of mind that I am being well supported and guided in my pursuit of progressing my career. When I first lost my job there was a lot of worry as I wasn’t sure how quickly the hospitality industry would recover. The guidance received when I first contacted UWS helped me realise I had a wealth of transferable skills and a lot to offer.
“I would encourage anyone thinking about career-changing study choices to choose UWS. It is a great place to study – they truly do put students first!”
