Hard work pays off for Emily
Most people would think taking on a Masters workload would be quite enough for one year, but not Emily Moffat. Emily, who graduated from our MSc Advanced Biomedical Science programme in 2021 looked at the big picture and decided to add to her workload to open up more possibilities for her future career.
“Whilst studying the Masters course, I also undertook two top-up modules, as advised by the Institute of Biomedical Science in order to meet the Health Care Professions Council standards of proficiency for Biomedical Scientists”, says Emily. “The University was very supportive of my decision to do this and all of the course staff were keen to encourage and support me throughout my studies."
Not only did Emily have the extra challenge associated with the increased workload, but during her Masters the COVID-19 pandemic hit. “Midway through the course all of the learning on the programme was moved online. Despite this, I felt that my learning experience continued to be of a high standard.”
“The University adapted to online learning very well, offering both live and recorded lectures, therefore allowing for a more flexible approach to studying from home. The lecturers were also always on hand to answer any questions and offer feedback to students.”
The MSc Advanced Biomedical Science programme at UWS is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science and this was the key reason behind Emily’s decision to study with us. It allowed her, along with the extra workload, to develop the key knowledge and skills to build a career within the NHS as a Biomedical Scientist.
That decision is already reaping its rewards for Emily as she has recently joined the new NHS Scotland regional COVID-19 testing laboratory at Gartnavel Hospital Campus.
“The laboratory is part of the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Specialist Virology Service and has the capacity to process in excess of 20,000 COVID-19 samples per day. We use state-of-the-art, high throughput amplitude systems to detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in the samples we receive.”
Emily says it is an honour to be able to support the NHS Virology Service during the COVID-19 pandemic, and we at UWS are very proud of the work she is doing to support the country through the crisis.
