BSc Mental Health Nursing student Peter Cartwright had been exposed to the issue of mental health from a young age – his parents worked in the field. And at the age of 26 when
Peter was looking for a change of career he decided this was the profession for him.
“I was always fascinated with how the brain works and how mental illness can impact on quality of life,” says Peter. “I have a passion for meeting new people and thought that I was ideally suited for a career in this area. As soon as I started the course at UWS I knew I had made the correct choice.”
Peter highlights the practical experience he is gaining during the course through placement opportunities as being vital for his future career. “Having the opportunity to put theory into practice is very beneficial. The placements give you a real sense of the job and a good insight into best practice.”
Looking ahead, Peter plans on a career within addiction services and maybe even imparting his experience and knowledge on future students through lecturing further down the line. And Peter makes special mention of the UWS lecturers he plans on emulating.
“The support from my lecturers has been fantastic – they’re approachable and extremely passionate about their subject which leads to a great learning environment.”
