Spreading good practice
Carol Munro’s career has taken a few twists and turns over the years and when she was looking for her most recent qualification, there was only one place to study – UWS. Why? Well, Carol knew she was in safe hands having studied with us twice before.
“My reasons for studying again at UWS was due to my previous experience of good quality education and support from the staff and university,” says Carol.
Carol’s initial career choice was in media and she studied Media Theory & Production with the University, graduating in 2000. Following a detour into IT training, Carol discovered a passion for teaching and completed her PGDE Primary at UWS in 2009 and for the last nine years has been working as part of a team who provide access to a teacher for children aged three to five in pre-schools and partnership nurseries.
“We work directly with children and model good practice in early years learning,” says Carol. “This role required me to gain in-depth knowledge of early years policy and practice.” And that’s where UWS came in again.
Carol’s MEd qualification has not only been vital to her own development, but also to the work of her team. “As a team we have been involved in supporting P1 play pedagogy amongst teachers within East Ayrshire and the findings from my MEd dissertation have strengthened our argument for encouraging play throughout the early level in education and helped us to begin creating a practice note for teachers that we hope will be rolled out across the authority.”
And don’t think that Carol is stopping there. There are still a few stops on her career journey ahead. “A huge part of my job is to model good practice and with my MEd Early Years qualification my confidence in myself has been increased, as has the confidence that others have in me to advise and help them. I definitely feel that I can now look at further promoted posts within the education sector and know that I have the knowledge and qualifications to undertake these.”
