UWS Science programmes
UWS offer a wide range of postgraduate science related degree courses:
Practical experience
A number of our science programmes offer opportunities to gain valuable work experience in industry-based or research roles taken as an additional term of study.
External experts and industry practitioners also deliver lectures on key topics – meaning you’ll learn directly from professionals already working within your chosen profession.
Some of our Science programmes are accredited or recognised by leading professional bodies such as the Institute of Biomedical Science.
Specialist facilities
Our Paisley campus hosts an advanced chemical analysis lab allowing for chemical analysis for isotopic andele-mental analysis at trace concentrations.
The campus also hosts a spatial and pattern analysis (SPAR) lab, providing high specification work-stations, geographical information system (GIS) software, geochemical and image processing facilities.
In addition, there is a histology lab. This is home to an automated tissue processor, tissue embedding workstation, automated microtome, cryostat, automated slide stainer and an auto-mated slide scanner
The newly-developed facilities at our Lanarkshire Campus include technology-enhanced bioscience teaching labs, specialised zoology laboratory facilities and a microbiology suite.
Our cutting-edge teaching facilities also include genomic, biochemical, cell biology and advanced image analysis systems.
Cutting-edge research
Here’s just some of the work we’re currently involved in, to better our understanding of the world around us:
- Researchers are working towards a breakthrough in managing fish health with the development of a biochemical monitoring tool that could transform the global aqua-culture sector
- Creating a viable preventative treatment for Acanthamoeba Keratitis – a devastating eye condition which affects millions of people each year
- Researchers have identified a link between noisy road traffic with air pollutants and an increased chance of hypertension – a top risk factor for heart attack and stroke
