MICROBIOLOGY RESEARCH
We are proud that our research interests of the research group maps directly on to a number of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
From investigating arthritis, alopecia, diabetes, COPD, cancer genetics, fish health, nutrition ecotoxicology, aquaculture, fish welfare, biodiversity, reproductive immunology, host-pathogen interactions, parasitology drug discovery, host-pathogen interaction, ecology, infection control, antimicrobial resistance, bioremediation, through to all aspects of public health. Research conducted under microbiology can be in any area of our expertise including:
- Antimicrobial resistance
- Infection and Disinfection
- Parasitology
- Host-pathogen interactions
- Drug development
United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
We can confidently state that our research activities in microbiology directly map to 5 UN SDGs:
SDG 3 - Good Health & Wellbeing; SDG 6 - Clean water and sanitation; SDG 13 - Climate Action; SDG 14 - Life below water; SDG 15 - Life on land.
UWS aims to be among the global leaders of excellent, relevant and purposeful research aligned with the United Nations SDGs by placing them at the heart of our Strategy 2025.
In the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2024, UWS was officially recognised in the top 400 universities worldwide as assessed against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UWS was recognised as the 2nd most impactful university in Scotland, and 16th globally, for 'reducing inequalities' (UN SDG 10).
Infection & Microbiology Research Group
As an integral part of the UWS Institute of Biomedical & Health Research (IBHR), our research spans areas of microbiology from human to environmental health.
Within the human health remit we have projects in infection control in public health to studies of the immune response and development of new medicines for parasitic infections.
Within the environmental field, we are studying the emergence of antimicrobial resistance and how microbes can be utilised in bioremediation.
We have wider links to research partners including research institutions, industry and the NHS.
