How to look after your mental health at university
University can be a challenging time. Whether it’s challenging yourself with academic work, living on your own for the first time, making new friends or balancing a part-time job with your university work – it can be difficult to check in with yourself on top of this! It's important to make sure you are prioritising your mental health throughout your time studying. Here are 4 ways you can improve your wellbeing.
Connect with others
- Make friends and build relationships. Connection with others is a key when thinking about your mental health. Spending time with people you enjoy can boost your mood and reduce stress.
- Join UWS sport teams or societies. Participating in activities you enjoy can help you meet like-minded people. If you’re not sure what you like, try something you’ve never done before – you never know how it will turn out!
- Talk to someone. If you're feeling overwhelmed, talk to a friend, family member, or academic staff. Don’t feel you have to deal with things on your own - there is support for you at UWS.
Remember, connections can be big or small. Chatting with someone new for a few minutes or grabbing a coffee with a classmate. If you feel you’re missing out on this, try spending a little more time on campus during the week. These small interactions build up over time and will improve your overall wellbeing.
Manage your stress
- Practice relaxation techniques. Meditation, deep breathing, or any personal techniques you have. There are so many resources out there now – if you are in need of inspiration try looking on YouTube or visiting the UWS Library!
- Get enough sleep. Aim for 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night. Making sure you are well rested will be the foundation to build all the other good stuff from.
- Get moving. Use the UWS gym facilities or get outside for a walk.
- Eat a healthy diet. Nutritious foods can help you feel better physically and mentally.
Take care of yourself
Set realistic goals. Don't try to do everything at once. Start small and build up over time. Take breaks. It's important to take time for yourself and relax. Avoid unhealthy coping mechanisms. Alcohol and drugs can worsen mental health problems.
